McLaren 2017 launch: livery splits fan opinion

McLaren have unveiled their MCL32 with a radically re-designed livery as the team look to return to the front of the grid.

The team’s 2017 challenger echoes designs of yesteryear as the historic orange colouring makes a return after a 46-year absence from the McLaren racing brand.

Double World Champion Fernando Alonso has branded the new identity as ‘spectacular,’ but team boss Eric Boullier was quick to turn his attention to the perspective performance of the car.

“There’s a feeling around the factory that we’re about to turn the corner,” Boullier insisted.

Despite the enthusiasm of McLaren personnel, though, the car has not received a universally positive reception.

Some fans remain sceptical as to how competitive the package will be.

Others, meanwhile, questioned whether the radical livery was as exciting as initially anticipated.

A significant minority criticised the design for incorporating too much black alongside the orange, drawing parallels with the classic Arrows team.

However, the livery has, overall, been praised by fans as a faithful throwback, whilst still retaining a degree of originality.
